We have roots !

It's confirmed.
The Romaine Lettuce that I bought from the night market has grown roots,
after about a week with its lower stem submerged in water !

The roots

The plant after a week on hydroponic? Will it survive till transplanting to soil? Only time and experiment will tell....

At first, I left all the plants at the wash area where it will get direct sunlight in the morning for about 4 hours. The plant withered quite quickly on the first 4 four days, and so my wife and I decided to shift them to the door step of the balcony glass door in front, indoor, where they still get bright light for most of the day.
The water is changed almost everyday. I made an effort to use "aired water", so that the chlorine in the tap water is reduced. I do it by just leaving a basin of tap water in the open anywhere in the house for at least 2 hours.

  1. Nice to roots appearing. Just wonder the kind of condition this lettuce needs to continue growing... Good luck! ~bangchik

  3. The appearance of roots is a good sign. Do you think it will be any better if most of the leaves are removed?

I didn't know we can grown lettuce this way. I thought it is through seeds. This is very interesting indeed.

  4. Autumn Belle, actually I was experimenting as I read a blog somewhere that successfully grew roots on another plant, forgot what was it.

In my opinion, I think it's best to leave most of the leaves intact (after plugging away a few at the lower stem), as u know, plants rely on the green leave to make food & live. Plus the leaves also serves as store of energy to help the plant grow roots faster from rootless state, given the right condition.
I would agree to remove leaves that have browned out about half or 3 quarters.

I have actually transplanted all of them. Still finding time to blog about it, u know, low-middle income working class, day-in day-out hectic....

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

p/s: I would love to grow some from seed, but I just couldn't find it around my place in Bkt Jalil and I've been putting off going to the 3 nurseries nearby, guess the hot~2 weather has been putting me off. Also, it's hard to find seed exchange forum that ship to Malaysia.
So, anyone you know that grow lettuces from seeds and are willing to send some to Malaysia,I'd like to hear it.
