Bathing them under direct SUN for a few hours a day really speed their growth...
and NOW, forth leaf is in sight !

Budding Romaine Lettuce
My earlier suspicion is correct.
The only surviving romaine lettuce plant I bought and grew by just sticking it into the pot with soil is now showing signs of flowering.
*exciting* can't wait to see if it'll have seeds for me... hee hee...

Romaine Lettuce as of 16 May 2010
It's not sure to me now if the leaves of this Romaine Lettuce is still edible....
It seems like it has been triggered to shoot for the sky (flower then seed).

These babies looks like red globe amaranth which is not edible,
I'm now anxiously worrying if this is true.

SEEDLINGS !!!
Yeahoo , we... have... ... ... seedlings !!!!
Seedlings from Red Amaranth set B. 2 seeds, 100% germination.

The 5 cents coin is there for scale. The coin is ~16mm in diameter.
It feels like a whole new world if you ask me.
They looked marvellously full of life even though they are so minuscule.
Amazingly at this young stage, it's already so smart... note how they are slanted to one side towards the bright light direction !

It's now babysitting everyday to nurture them into strong young-lings and then will have to think about thinning.

Green costs ?
Invested RM 15 for a container - RM5 (pictured below), 2 x 7L all-purpose potting soil - RM4/ea and a 7L bag of black soil - RM2, today at the nearby nursery located at Happy Garden (Off Old Klang Rd).
I just love this kind of "self-watering" container.
Not only that you need not worry about watering so much, it's also much easier to move them around without the saucers / pans that conventional pots/containers need.
hmmph, never shop for your gardening needs from supermarket chain-store unless absolutely no choice!
Just realised that the rectangle container I bought earlier from Carrefour could be had at only RM10.90 from this nursery. However, please note that some nursery do sell at prices same as the supermarkets. Do your hunting (shopping that is) !

New Container
Bought this container the same time the red amaranth seeds pack was bought.
RM15.90 from Carrefour
Went around the compound of the condo and collected stones that were lying around on the grass patches, fruit tree shades....
My wife and I armed ourselves with just a 500g cornflake paper box and a plastic bag for each of our right hand. We were amazed a 4/5 full box has more than enough stone to lay for a draining layer on this new container.
The brand of this container is Gafri as opposed to Baba (cheaper too for the same size) which I'm pretty sure every container gardener in Malaysia will gripe about the lack of brand choices and in turn design choices + pricing...

It's the end.

Experiment falling apart

It's a sad news.
As soon as I reached home today, I noticed one of the transplanted Romaine Lettuce has "collapsed" !

I've actually transplanted all some 1.5 weeks ago. This was one that had not grown any roots aquaponically (I believe this is the correct term to use instead of hydroponic).
The transplantation as of 1.5 weeks ago. The collapsed one today is on the right.
Ironically, the one that was transplanted very early on, even before the appearance of roots as in earlier post, is showing the best of signs.
At the same time I started this experiment, I also tinkered with composting using a small container and organic soil (the same soil as used in above photos). The organic scraps were of those Romaine Leave plucked off from the lower stem.
When I was digging in to add in some fresh carrot peels leftover today (some 3 weeks since start), I noticed the bugs below. No wonder the cabbage scraps I added in some two days ago got chewed up so fast. I recalled during the start, the Romaine leaves remained intact even after 3 days....
A search on the internet did not help me identifying it, so hopefully some of you who stops by here can .... Hope I'm not rearing some pests here...( I did kept the compost soil very moist most of the time )
